30m x 2.5m Freestanding Canopy

Location:

Bryn Alyn School Wrexham North Wales.

Able Canopies Ltd invited us to design and quote a freestanding walkway canopy at Bryn Alyn School in North Wales early this year. Two members of our team travelled to Wrexham to undertake a site survey and to identify what design would work the best with the area, we quickly realised that it would not be straight forward as the construction company building the school had already laid the concrete foundations for the canopy so we had to work from the ground level they had set.

To add to this problem, parts of the area had not yet been built so we had to also work from construction drawings supplied by the contractor. Having completed a full site survey, Fabrications Direct produced a quotation for a solution that matched the design criteria, which was within budget and of sufficient size to meet the client’s needs and we were awarded the contract.

We produced a number of designs however Able Canopies eventually chose a curved roof design which would provide optimum weather proof coverage for the outdoor walkway. After the final design was approved we got straight to work with the manufacturing of the canopy, a total of 29 separate drawings were produced for each individual part in the canopy and our team of fabricators began the work.

Large parts of the frame work had to be assembled in the factory due to the compacted nature of them such as the corner section which was particularly difficult as we had designed it as one complete unit to make installation of the canopy simpler. Every piece of the steel frame work was numbered and an onsite drawing was produced showing where all the parts, this was a great time saver for the installation team. The frame was finished in the 8 days it was required in and it was installed by Able Canopies with no difficulties or problems reported.

28m Cantilever Walkway for Fabric Roof

Location:

Hurstpier Point College West Sussex.

Optional Extras:

Earlier this year Able Canopies Ltd invited us to tender on a 28m long canopy they wanted to install at Hurstpierpoint Collouge in West Sussex. After our site survey visit we discovers some areas on site that would prevent us from constructing a traditional canopy that is supported on both sides, after speaking with the customer we agreed a cantilever canopy design.

We then set to work on designing a canopy that could cover a 28m x 5m area and only be supported on one side, we worked closely with a structural engineer so our canopy design passed all of the wind and snow load calculations it needed to comply with Able Canopies strict design policy, once we had the design complete it was agreed by all parties involved.
We also had to make sure the canopy covered the entire area and there wasn’t a gap between the canopy and the existing building, this was all worked out before we went ahead with manufacturing.(See Picture 3)

As Fabrications Direct was designing and manufacturing the frame we had to work closely with the fabric roof company and we designed the fixings used to attach the fabric in place.

Roof Corner Clamp Plate:

The plate is connected to the fabric and sits in a shot gut extrusion on top of the frame roof bar, as you tighten the fixing it stretches the fabric to a tight firm finish.

The clamp plate is made from 6mm thick stainless steel which is laser cut.

We produced a total of 17 drawings for this frame for all of the individual components; the frame roof was manufactured in house using our section rolling machines and fully welded by a team of 4 fabricators that worked on this project.

It took a total of 5 days to produce this canopy in a raw steel finish, it was then sent off to be Galvanized and Powder Coated which took the total manufacturing time to 10 days. This was in time and in budget.

We produced a number of onsite drawings to help Able Canopies Install team construct the frame in the most time effective way, all parts are given numbers and drawings showing the exploded views to help everyone involved.
